The Reality TV workout – fake or fabulous?

March 22, 2016 by wildcatfitness

In the past few years as a London based Personal Trainer, Fitness Instructor and Blogger I’ve been lucky enough to have some incredible opportunities come my way and I’ve met some amazing people. I’ve trained musicians, actors, professional sports players…. and last week I got to train with my first reality TV stars – Charlotte and Holly from the hit MTV show Geordie Shore.

Ahead of the launch of series 12 of the show, MTV and influencer agency 1mpact invited a select group of fitness bloggers to the MTV Studios in Camden to experience the workout the Geordie girls are put through to prepare themselves for 6 full-on weeks in their reality TV show house, along with the girls themselves and the man behind the workout, Richard Callendar. And I thought I wore a lot of lipgloss to work out in… the glamorous Geordies put the trademark Wildcat glam to shame! The workout was fun (and by no means easy), but getting to talk to the girls afterwards was not only a privilege, but also made me stop and think about the life of a reality TV star and how fitness, health and body image sits within it.

Transformation Tuesday, Throwback Thursday, even Froback Friday – social media is always encouraging us to look back in time, and whilst I most definitely advocate a lifestyle of no regrets, I definitely do advocate using old photos as a way to track your progress when it comes to exercise and weight loss. I am forever telling frustrated clients who swear they can’t see a difference that their body has changed, but this can be hard to see on a day to day basis, which is why I believe, and actively encourage both Wildcat Fitness clients and anyone embarking on a fitness journey of any kind to document their progress in photos. Often it isn’t until you look back that you realise who far you’ve come, and we all need that extra push sometimes to see this for ourselves. If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know I regularly post my progress photos, like this one:

I like to think it is a pretty big difference between these two photos – the left is my 29th Birthday and the right was taken in August this year – but it is important for me to point out that there is almost 6 years between these photos, so whilst the changes are obvious, they were not achieved overnight.
Instant access to thousands of photos like these via Instagram, Twitter and other social media sites can lead us to believe that lasting body transformations are possible in a matter of weeks, leading to disappointment when the scales don’t budge. Fitness is very much a journey, one that will hopefully last a lifetime, but it does require commitment and most of all patience. Fitness and weight loss are also one of the most personal journeys that you will ever go on, which is something I often need to remind myself of when I find myself scrolling through my Insta feed and constantly comparing myself to others. It is hard not to when we can be seemingly surrounded by both wannabe and actual fitness models on our various news feeds, but don’t forget a photo can only tell you so much.  [Read more…] about No comparison
